Today's Viana beads - hollow, and once even lighter than they are now - are direct descendants of Greek, Phoenician, Roman and Etruscan beads, and the Etruscan ones are the closest to the beads we know today. The granulation (or "dusting") and the surrounding filigree work were purely decorative: what always mattered most was the bead's round, spherical shape. A woman from Viana would buy her bead necklace before the much-longed-for rope chain. It was often bought one bead at a time, paid for with the young women's small savings, usually earned by selling eggs or chickens.
