Today's Viana beads — hollow, and once lighter still — descend directly from Greek, Phoenician, Roman and Etruscan work, the Etruscan closest of all to what we make now. The granulation and the filigree that wraps them were never more than ornament: what has always mattered is the spherical, rounded form. A woman of Viana would acquire her bead necklace before the long-desired gold chain. Often she bought it one bead at a time, out of what little she had put aside — usually from selling eggs, or trading chickens.

Made in sterling silver (925), 9-carat gold and 19-carat Portuguese gold. Every piece we make is hallmarked at the Porto Assay Office, which certifies the metal.
